Rhythm Nation

When the music stops, the real story begins
documentary tv_series €3,200,000 4 episodes x 60 minutes
Project Description
This documentary series explores the underground electronic music scenes that transformed cities and created cultural revolutions. Each episode focuses on a different city's definitive era: Detroit techno (1985-1992), Berlin's post-Wall club culture (1990-1996), London's drum and bass revolution (1994-1998), and Tokyo's experimental electronic movement (1997-2003). Through intimate interviews with DJs, producers, club owners, and scene regulars, alongside meticulously restored archival footage, we trace how music created in basements and warehouses shaped global culture and responded to specific social and political environments. The series examines how these movements created communities for marginalized groups and how they've evolved in the digital age.
Creative Vision
Rather than a nostalgia piece, this series will draw clear connections between past innovations and current musical landscapes. Visually, we'll blend newly shot interviews with carefully sourced archival material, creating immersive recreations where footage is lacking. Original electronic scores will be commissioned from key artists from each scene. The editing will be rhythmic and dynamic, echoing the musical styles being discussed without becoming disorienting.
